I just told someone outside of the fintwit space that $FB renamed the company to "Meta". They were clearly confused (and laughing about it). It's clear this 'metaverse' and 'web3' wave is very insulated to tech enthusiasts.

Either way, I wonder if Facebook (now Meta) will be able to get the average person to adopt the 'metaverse' or we'll find that tech is too insulated of an echo chamber.

I think a good argument can be made for changing a name to something more 'inclusive' of its multiple brands. Facebook really undersells the reach of its other businesses. From that perspective, it could have picked a much-worse name than META. In Google's case, I always questioned the need to change the name bc Google was based on googal, a mathematical term for a HUGE number that I felt somewhat accomplished the goal of reflecting unlimited opportunity

Big agree. I always thought it was a bad move to associate Facebook brand with their other products (Instagram, Whatsapp). I'd say this is a great decision to move away from the Facebook name while getting a trendy new name.

Same here, told my friend and he didn’t even know what the metaverse was, or that Facebook was involved with it. Still very early innings, but I like the name change

Here is the way I see it, if people really do have spam of goldfish with in 5-10 years no one will remember Facebook IF they don’t get any large negative publicity BUT I think they will like big tobaccos there will most likely always be a target on FB back from media

And so as long as FB is being seen as toxic people will be reminded of that

Trust and reputation can’t be bought with a name change
