Fed Speakers, Earnings, JOLTS. Oh yeah, and Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan
Good morning contrarians! Nancy Pelosi’s anticipated visit to Taiwan has stock futures on edge a little bit, but not as much as you might expect if World War 3 truly was imminent.

For whatever reason, the Pelosi visit is not being treated very seriously by the market. Even in Asia the sell-off was not particularly acute, with indexes in Hong Kong and Shanghai down no more than 2% and change. Investors are either being way too blase about this or they recognize Chinese bluster when they see it.

The Fed remains the bigger focus here. Are Powell and co really set to shift to a neutral stance on interest rates? How soon? These questions are front and center of investors’ minds. For now, the narrative that the Fed pivot is coming soon appears to be winning out, at least judging by markets. Most Powell-inspired rallies fade after a day or two. This one is almost a week old already.

Chicago Fed President Charles Evans speaks this morning. St. Louis Fed President James Bullard after the close this afternoon.

Earnings: $DD just beat on top- and bottom-line and raised guidance. $MPC beat on top- and bottom-line. $CAT was mixed.

Crack Spreads
Crack spreads measure the difference between crude oil as an input and heating oil as well as gasoline as outputs -- in other words: what do refiners pay for crude vs. what can they sell the products for.

The spread is trading at record highs, fueling the rally in refineries -- more here: https://www.bluelinefutures.com/insights/post/421/

Balancing Beliefs and Profits
How/do you incorporate personal beliefs in your investing philosophy?

With the rise of ESG, there has been a larger focus on more conscious investing. Are you strictly business economic focused or do have a personal "moral" compass that steers you towards/away from certain investments?

Some examples of my mental guardrails:
  • Tobacco Companies - $MO is a darling of the dividend community, but I do not want to invest in companies that profit off of a potential detriment to the human health.

  • Car Manufacturers - After working for $PPG as a Tier I supplier to the auto plants, I had the opportunity to work intimately with them daily. After seeing (and feeling) the ups and downs of the industry and the daily operations, I do not want to invest in these companies.

  • Oil/Gas Companies - My view on this has slightly changed. I used to be 100% anti-old energy. However, seeing the efforts of companies like $MPLX, $MPC, $CVX to make their processes as environmentally sustainable as possible has started to change my perception of these businesses.

So, Commonstock, what are your thoughts?

Good morning contrarians! Another day of gains yesterday was followed with Google ($GOOG) beating earnings estimates and announcing a 20-for-1 stock split. AMD ($AMD.X) also beat estimates and issued a strong sales outlook for the year. Those stocks rallied big time overnight, both up over 10%.

On the losing side of last night’s earnings were Starbucks (SBUX) and PayPal ($PYPL), the latter down 17%.

It’s another major day for earnings. It’s another major day for earnings. ThermoFisher Scientific ($TMO), Boston Scientific ($BSX), Humana ($HUM), and Marathon Petroleum ($MPC) have already reported. All but HUM beat on top- and bottom-line estimates and those stocks are moving higher in the pre-market. Later this morning we will hear from AbbVie ($ABBV) and DR Horton ($DHI).

After the close at 1600 we’ll get T-Mobile ($TMUS), Qualcomm ($QCOM), Meta Platforms, the company formerly known as Facebook ($FB), and Spotify ($SPOT). MetLife ($MET) and McKesson ($MCK) also report at some point today.

What else we’re watching today:
Upcoming Earnings Calendar (Jan 31st- Feb 4th)
Hey guys!

Here's the earnings calendar for next week! Here's what I'm interested in:

  • $XOM - Insights on the global oil market.
  • $GOOG - Strength of the digital ad market + growth of YouTube (since $NFLX slowed down).
  • $FB - Comments on their strategy to monetize Whatsapp (I don't expect any, but one can hope).
  • $SPOT - They recently expanded to other markets, so maybe they can maintain accelerated growth, unlike Netflix.
  • $AMZN - AWS and Advertising segment growth + impact of the increase in 3P fees.

What are you looking forward to next week?
