CPI and Companies Agree, Inflation is Running Hot

Last week, before the release of the November CPI, Fincredible released its latest MacroTalk covering the topic of inflation. In it, they go over what CEOs and CFOs have recently been seeing regarding their costs and prices.

From the post, it was clear that inflation is still running hot, and that it will likely stay that way in the upcoming quarter. For example, here are three quotes extracted from the Macrotalk that illustrate the point:

$CBRL: "Both commodity and wage inflation exceeded our expectations in the first quarter, and we now expect full year commodity inflation and constant mix wage inflation in the high single digits."
$WMT “Walmart U.S. gross profit rate declined 12 basis points, reflecting increased supply chain costs. We're seeing inflationary cost pressures in some areas."
$BJ "We continue to experience meaningful inflation and its impact was felt across almost all categories. While we passed on price increases in many areas, we invested to maintain our price gaps against our competitors in the places we found value to do so."

For now, the CPI and companies agree: inflation is running hot. Next quarter we'll get a new round of earnings calls that will hopefully give us more visibility into the inflation for the full year 2022.

Consumer Goods Still In High Demand

In this week's Fincredible MacroTalk, we go over retailers' earnings calls to get a sense of the strength of the US consumer.

In the past few weeks, companies like $WMT, $TGT, and $BBY reported strong volume sales despite higher inflation, the end of government stimulus, and a shift in spending towards services. While these results appear to show a strong consumer and robust demand for goods, there's also the possibility that some of it can be attributed to early holiday shopping.

Here are four quotes on what these companies are seeing:

$WMT "Obviously, there are some parts of the stimulus that have wound down in Q3. Things like child care credits that kept going through Q3. But demand is really strong. Unit demand is strong. So in our stores, they're crowded. So we continue to see good demand. And I think as you comment -- your question stated almost, as we get further and further away from stimulus, I think it makes us feel better and better about the demand for what we're doing.”

$AMZN "Consumers have started to return to pre-pandemic spending patterns, increasing the mobility and spending more on travel and services in Q2 and Q3 but we are appreciative that the incremental demand that came our way during the pandemic has remained, and that we are continuing to grow on top of that."

$BBY "**We continue to capitalize on strong customer demand as more people sustainably work, entertain, cook and connect at home .** And Domestic comparable sales growth was up 2% on top of 23% last year. From a merchandising perspective, the biggest contributors to our comparable sales growth in the quarter were appliances, home theater and mobile phones."

$DKS "**As for consumers pull forward demand, so far, in Q3, we didn't think that was the case. We don't think that's the case .** Obviously, we have Thanksgiving this weekend. Anecdotally, the news is buzzing about lack of product availability across every single retailer, so I imagine there will be some pull forward."

Upcoming Earnings Calendar, Nov 22-27

A very light earnings week up ahead. I'm mostly interested in Zoom $ZM. I think the stock's valuation is starting to make some sense if they can continue growing their paid user base or adding other features. I'm also interested in seeing what Best Buy $BBY has to say about the consumer demand for electronics and some comments on supply chain issues.

Why would two companies announce on an American holiday when the markets not open, then why would you announce on the day after a holiday, when it's a short trading day. Some companies just make wonder about commonsense.
