BlackRock Shallow Dive!
In my second edition of “Shallow Dives” I will be analyzing BlackRock $BLK. BlackRock is the largest asset manager in the world. They have nearly $10 trillion in assets under management and a ~34% market share. So, let’s dive into the industry and competitive advantage.

The asset management industry is facing two major shifts. The first shift is towards passive investment strategies. Passive domestic equity investment is now larger in AUM than active domestic equity investment. This trend should continue and benefit firms like BlackRock.

BlackRock is known for its passive investment strategies. 2/3rds of its AUMs are from passive vehicles and half of its annual revenue. As the shift to passive continues, BlackRock will be well-positioned to continue increasing its AUM.

The second shift BlackRock is facing is a headwind in the fall in expense ratios of funds. The average asset weight passive fee today is 0.41% (not including money market funds or fund of funds) which is less than half of what it was in 2000.

BlackRock does have a competitive advantage in terms of switching costs, brand name, and scale. While it does not hard to switch to another passive investment vehicle, people normally don’t. The industry average retention rate is >75% and BlackRock is estimated to be higher.

It is not too hard to open an ETF, but scaling one is extremely difficult. Many investors look for a track record of success and a reputation. That obviously takes many years to build and cannot be replicated easily.

BlackRock also has economies of scale giving them cost advantages. It does not cost much more to manage additional money. They are able to offer their funds at a lower expense ratio than their competitors, yet, still have an impressive 39% operating margins.

Would love to hear what other people think about BlackRock!

Their closed-end funds are highly underrated. More of their iShares clients should consider looking at their closed end funds if they want more yield on their investment.

Blackrock and hypocrisy
After looking deeper into $BLK I noticed that I don't like the moral aspect of the investment at all. So much hypocrisy. Preaching ESG here and there and then invest $15 billion into saudi pipelines and buying tons of defense stock the day Russia invades Ukraine

Over the next weeks I'll evaluate deep moat alternatives in the financial sector: $MCO, $MSCI, $SPGI. If anybody knows good writeups about it, please let me know.
