Interesting to see him focusing on the thriving tech scene developing currently in Penang and the incentives on offer to lure foreign companies (tax exemptions and affordable land). 350 multinational corporations and more than 3,000 manufacturing-related SMEs are currently based there and one of them is Intel $INTC.
Actually the tech scene in Malaysia is not emerging, given that the country has been trying for decades to turn the country's fortunes around via tech since the days of Super Corridor. Morbius's post seems more like a tourist musing, and he has been based out of Asia for decades already, for personal and professional reasons. Penang will continue to be attractive as a low cost manufacturing based destination, but beyond that, it appears to be an uphill battle. There are reasons why the country has seen its currency depreciate over decades....
