@rihardjarc indeed. It is catching up but most likely it will take a while before $ABNB reaches $BKNG profitability with the main reason being the higher SBC.
@stockopine For sure. But I think $ABNB takes its current platform as its 1st inning and will expand the platform to suit and fulfill also other customer interests, while $BKNG has been around for years and hasn't made any significant move or ambition going beyond just a booking platform...I think in 5 years, we will be talking about two different platforms with different TAMs.
@rihardjarc interesting perspective. A significant move has been the increase in airline tickets space and the alternative accommodation. It shall also be noted that it is moving away from the purely booking platform (agency) to merchant (facilitate the payment, promote rooms to the right customer, offer mobile discounts to enhance loyalty etc.).
Booking holdings has a 12 year head start on Airbnb, I'm going to guess in 12 years Airbnb will be as profitable as Booking Holdings is today. We'll see what happens!
@nathanworden definitely. In 12 years’ time it is more likely than not that it will achieve it. In our opinion this will be achieved earlier but who knows?
@stockopine depends a lot on how Airbnb plays out in the hotel industry. There is a limit to how much market there is in vacation rentals / rooms type stays
They may look promising on paper, but I will never invest in them after personal experience. Their service is horrid if you ever need to manage a reservation. Changing dates through their website got me to a “pending status” that never changed, reached out to hotel and they never received change request. Spoke to Booking and they said Hotel has not acted on request, and promptly ended call because “there was nothing they could do.” Couldn’t cancel without paying for half of the stay either.
Thankfully the hotel was able to move it for me, just had to trust that they did it internally because Booking never changed the dates. Never using them again.
