Today, I’m thrilled to share Commonstock’s $25 million Series A led by Coatue, along with existing investors QED, Floodgate, Upside Ventures, Resolute Ventures, Abstract Ventures. This also includes strategic investors Bill Ackman, Dan Loeb, Louis Bacon, Stanley Druckenmiller, Jimmy Dunne, Gavin Baker, Larry Fitzgerald, Ari Emanuel, Michael Ovitz, Li Jin, Jill Carlson, Turner Novak, Sahil Bloom, and many of our earliest community members who were so foundational in building this community. We are excited and humbled to have assembled such a dream team of supporters, with deep experience across traditional finance, social networks, and creator-based platforms.
Since launching our beta a year ago, we’ve had billions of dollars in portfolio value linked to Commonstock... we’re just getting started!
Over the past year, the world experienced a fundamental shift in the way markets operate. The information advantage is moving away from Wall Street and towards Main Street. Even the Wall Street Journal admits the tide is shifting:
“Deep-pocketed banks and hedge funds now take their cues from armies of Main Street traders” - WSJ
Investors fluent in real-time consumer sentiment, social media, novel asset classes, viral trends and memes: THAT is the new smart money, like it or not.
Great investment ideas today don’t look like they used to, and they often come from unexpected sources. That’s why we’re building a place to amplify ideas and people based on their merit, not on their marketing.
The data backs this up: the average account linked to Commonstock consistently outperformed the S&P 500. Lower barriers, transformational technologies and new asset classes have increased access to asymmetric upside and created generational wealth before our very eyes. The most valuable skill today is the ability to proactively adapt to rapidly evolving market dynamics.
Of course, new dynamics mean that accurate information is more critical than ever. Increased participation is fantastic, but only if knowledge keeps pace. The demand is there: investors of all experience levels are insatiably hungry for trusted insights to learn and improve.
The rise of retail investors will have a profound, positive long-term impact on society. Yes, newer entrants have very different risk tolerances and take a different approach than prior generations... that’s normal! The best way for younger investors to learn about markets is to actively engage and get skin in the game. Consider this: teenagers today name-drop the Chairman of the Federal Reserve because financial knowledge is cool. Schools, banks, and parents have been trying - and failing - to achieve that level of financial literacy for decades.
Our mission at Commonstock is to make quality investing knowledge accessible, engaging and fun. We do this by amplifying the ideas of the best investors - the supply side of knowledge - for signal over noise.
It’s been an amazing year for Commonstock, and we owe it all to you, the community. Thanks so much for being part of this journey and helping us get here. Keep telling us your stories and sharing your gains - and more importantly - your lessons learned!
Thanks again for helping us get us to this milestone. I'm so excited every day to keep building Commonstock for you. Let’s launch the next generation of world class investors together!
