Scream 6's box office performance is worth watching + Creed 3 already broke the $100 million box office mark
While much attention has been focused on Silicon Valley Bank, Silvergate, and Signature Bank, there seems to be little discussion surrounding the recently released Scream 6. In comparison to the buzz generated by films such as Avatar: The Way of Water or M3GAN, I have not heard much enthusiasm about this latest installment in the horror franchise. Despite a crowded March release schedule and concerns about the theater industry's slow recovery, it is uncommon for movies to achieve "franchise-best debut" status in today's market.

And the movie that earned the "franchise-best debut" title is Scream 6. Even more surprising is that the movie generated $44.5 million at the box office during opening weekend. for a film with a budget of $35 million, it's clear that the movie is guaranteed to reach profitability sometime soon.

Here's how the Scream movies have performed at the box office:

And if you pay attention to the purple line, you can find that the box office momentum for Scream 6 is higher than all of the other Scream movies.

Some will find Scream 6's strong performance to be unsurprising considering that Scream is a major cultural icon. the Scream costume is many people's go-to Halloween costume. Others will find that its strong performance is indicative of the overall growth in the horror genre in Hollywood. With M3GAN's unexpectedly strong performance, any horror movie that gets released these days is expected to perform strong. For movie investors, horror films are fantastic bets because low budgets + higher likelihood of generating tons of box office sales = high ROI.

Moving on, like the John Wick franchise, the Creed franchise has seen consistent growth as each new movie gets released. As noted in a previous memo, the Creed franchise's growth isn't comparable to the John Wick franchise because the box office revenues generated with each new Creed movie increases in incremental amounts. For John Wick, each new movie sees jumps in box office sales.

In the meantime, it's good to see that for a film that's been released 9 days ago, it already broke the $100 million box office milestone. However, with rumors that MGM lied about the budget of the film, these great box office numbers might not be enough to help the film breakeven.

It will be exciting to see how John Wick: Chapter 4 performs at the box office in two week.

It sounds like reshoots added to the budget of Creed III, but I wonder what incentive MGM has for misstating the budget?

@nathanworden MGM doesn’t want to displease investors, that’s why they’d lie about their budget

Scream 6 weekend gross was a major (and unexpected) outperformance, especially for a franchise from the 90s and into its 6th film! I watched the first 3, then lost track of the rest. Looking forward to all major movies coming out this year. P.S. The Little Mermaid trailer $DIS debuted last evening!

@consumeowntech I am excited about Little Mermaid! Thanks for letting me know about the trailer. Also, in late November, the prequel of the Hunger Games gets released and I can see it beating expectations by a wide margin.

@dissectmarkets Yeah Hunger Games prequel with Francis Lawrence, minus JLaw, plus a few interesting names! Will be watching that too !
