In the era of the MCU, it’s starting to look like 1 out of the top 5 films will be a Marvel film. I say this as Avatar 2 looks to beat Avengers: Infinity War in box office sales by the end of this week and become the 5th highest grossing film in the world.
Avatar 2 has been #1 at the box office for 6 weeks in a row. The last time we’ve seen a film perform this well was the first Avatar movie (like 14 years ago) which was #1 at the box office for 7 weeks.
The film that was #1 at the box office for over 6 weeks before Avatar was Titanic, which was #1 at the box office for 15 weeks.
All 3 films that were #1 at the box office for 6+ weeks straight at the box office, within the past 30 years, were all made by James Cameron. The entire theater industry has benefited immensely from Cameron’s phenomenal mind.
The level of consistency that Cameron has had for producing films that dominate the #1 spot at the box office for many weeks AND produce over $2 billion in box office sales speaks volumes. Cameron doesn’t have the strong IP that Marvel and Lucasfilm have but his movies perform better in the box office than your average Marvel and Lucasfilm movie.
There is a strong case that Avatar 2 can surpass Titanic’s box office sales and become the third highest grossing film ever. Rumors swirl around that
$DIS plans to create a massively new and epic marketing campaign for the film once it wins the Best Picture nomination. That brings more fuel for box office sales.
